Korean Names That Mean Hope
Hope is one of the most natural things to wish onto a child, and Korean has several ways to say it — the Hanja 希 ("to hope") and 望 ("to long for, to gaze toward"), plus warm native words for wishes and for taking flight.
It is a forward-looking theme. Where some names describe what a child is, hope names point at what is still to come — a wish, a horizon, something good not yet arrived. Here are five.
1. 소망 — Somang
From 所望 — "hope, a heartfelt longing." It is the very word Koreans use for the things they quietly wish for, which makes it one of the most direct and tender hope names there is. Warm, sincere, and a little prayerful.
2. 소원 — Sowon
From 所願 — "a wish, a heart's desire." Close to 소망, but with a subtle difference: where 소망 is open-ended hope, 소원 is the specific wish you make — on a star, at the new year, with your eyes closed and your fingers crossed.
3. 희 — Hui
The Hanja 希 means "to hope." It is worth knowing that the sound 희 has several characters behind it — 熙 ("bright") and 姬 ("lady") among them — so 희 only means "hope" when it is written 希. As always in Korean names, the character decides the meaning.
4. 나래 — Narae
A native word for "a wing" (a poetic form of 날개). It speaks of taking flight, of rising and reaching toward something — hope in motion rather than hope at rest. A popular, uplifting native name with a real sense of lift to it. Native Korean, no Hanja.
5. 희망 — Huimang
From 希望 — literally "hope." It is bold to use the full word as a name, but unmistakable: a child carrying hope itself, right there in the syllables. A name that wears its optimism openly.
A name pointed forward
Hope names share a particular warmth, because they are really about the future. To name a child 소망 or 나래 is to say, out loud, that you believe good things are coming for them. That makes the theme a favorite for parents in a hopeful season of life — and it pairs naturally with names of light and dawn, the whole family of brightening-toward-morning meanings.
Hope names pair naturally with themes of light and morning, since they share that forward-looking warmth — a sibling named for the dawn or a star sits beautifully beside a 소망 or a 나래. And if you want the meaning to be unmistakable, the native 나래 and the plain 소망 carry it clearly, no Hanja required.
Hope names look forward — toward a wish, a flight, a brighter thing not yet arrived.
