What Does the Korean Name Seoyun (서윤) Mean?

Seoyun (서윤) is graceful, gentle, and consistently near the top of the charts for girls. If it looks familiar, that is because it is a close cousin of Seoyeon — same soft first syllable, slightly different ending.

How to say it

In Revised Romanization, 서윤 is written Seo-yun, often spelled Seoyun or Seo-yoon in English. The first syllable, 서, sounds like "suh" (not "see-oh"). The second, 윤, is "yoon." Together: "Suh-yoon." The difference from Seoyeon is just that final sound — 윤 ("yoon") instead of 연 ("yun").

What it can mean

Seoyun's meaning comes from its Hanja, with a few graceful combinations:

  • 서 (瑞) — auspicious, a good omen
  • 서 (舒) — easeful, unhurried, relaxed
  • 윤 (潤) — to enrich, a gentle sheen
  • 윤 (允) — sincere, fair, trustworthy

That gives readings like an auspicious, enriching spirit (瑞潤) or a sincere and easeful heart (舒允). Like many popular names today, Seoyun is also chosen simply for its smooth, elegant sound.

Seoyun or Seoyeon?

These two are easy to mix up, and honestly they share a vibe — soft, refined, feminine. The practical difference is the ending: Seoyun finishes on "yoon" (윤), Seoyeon on "yun" (연). Both are lovely; it often just comes down to which sound a family prefers.

Two names, one feeling — proof that in Korean naming, a single syllable can change everything and nothing at once.
